Sea of Love Coupling: Melissa + Raj
Valentine’s Day is coming up, and whether you celebrate or find it cheesy, it’s impossible not to feel a little sweet as the holiday rolls around (even if that sweetness comes from the discount candy purchased on February 15th). We interviewed one of our favourite Toronto couples Melissa + Raj about how they spend February 14th, their best date spots in the city + why they’re sweet on each other.
How did you two meet?

M: We met in our last year of university where we were both
studying fine art. I had noticed Raj a few months before we actually
met and had developed a secret crush on him… but was too shy to do
anything about it. We found ourselves in the same media class and were
serendipitously paired by our prof to do a project together. Here we
 are thirteen years later!

How do you two celebrate Valentine’s Day?

M: We’ve never been big Valentine’s Day people. Though we say that
every year, and every year we do end up acknowledging the holiday in
some small way. Either with a handmade card, a love note Raj had
written on post-it notes stuck and around the house, a piece of heart
shaped toast or a giant homemade chocolate chip cookie.

R: There was one year I tried to surprise Melis with flowers, a bottle
of wine and chocolates. I came home to an apartment full of friends,
Melis had decided to throw a last minute (girls only) anti-valentine’s
day party.

M: Oh man. Yeah, and the girls all made fun of you!

If you could name just one – what would be your favourite part about each other?

R: I love everything about Melis. She is my favourite person. Picking
one favourite thing is tough, but if I had to, it would be that she always thinks about others and puts them before herself.

M: Raj is really an amazing guy. His ability to always see the bright
side of a situation and make me laugh even at difficult times is one
of the best things about him. (Ok, that’s two things.)

Have any pet peeves about each other?

M: His ability to always find the bright side! Sometimes I just need
to wallow under a dark cloud for awhile! (Also: Raj also owns a
slightly absurd number of socks. Which I find everywhere.)

R: She is a brutal art director. Getting ideas past her is next to impossible!

Do you two have a “song”? If so, what is it + why?

M: I feel like this is so cliche, it’s embarrassing and I’m tempted to
lie, but I won’t. We have two songs. Human League’s Don’t You Want Me
Baby (which was spurred by an art piece Raj did while we were in
school) is a song that we regularly sing along to (and is our go-to karaoke song). And Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes holds some special
meaning to us, and was our first dance at our wedding (and is actually
 a painfully long song).

R: Especially if you’re dancing alone in front of 90 of your closest
friends + family.

Tell Us How You’d spent the perfect day in Toronto?
M: Going out together at night is a bit of a luxury for us since we
have conflicting schedules and 2 small kids that make coordinating an
evening date a bit of a challenge. My perfect date would be simply
going out for a leisurely dinner and a walk through the city. Terroni
is a classic spot that I love, and walking west on Queen towards
Camera Bar where we got married and playing the “at this time __ years
ago” game is a pretty fun date to me.

R: Just getting out and doing something without the kids (as much as I
love them) is awesome. Going to eat at Canteen and seeing a movie at
the TIFF Lightbox theatre (without Melissa falling asleep!) would be a
great night out.

Broken Social Scene + their label Arts & Crafts defined the early 2000s in Toronto’s music scene. With a multitude of side-projects and associated bands playing weekly, it was an incredible time to be a music fan in the city.

Sea of Love Coupling: Sarah + Ryan
Valentine’s Day is coming up, and whether you celebrate or find it cheesy, it’s impossible not to feel a little sweet as the holiday rolls around (even if that sweetness comes from the discount candy purchased on February 15th). We interviewed one of our favourite Toronto couples Sarah + Ryan about how they spend February 14th, their best date spots in the city + why they’re sweet on each other.
How did you two meet?
S: A series of unfortunate incidents on the internet.R: She always writes funny stuff on people’s walls, so I added her on Facebook.S: Yeah, he’s known a bunch of my friends since the nineties, it’s weird. Anyway we were talking on Facebook and then I got mugged a few days later and he stopped writing to me all of a sudden.R: My message of concern never sent! S: And then a few months later, I met some dude who asked me out, and I said yes, but then his texts were all spelled ridiculously wrong. So since it was 4 AM and I am a jerk, I decided to post a screenshot of this winner’s texts on Instagram. Ryan saw that I was still single and asked me out, so I went out with him instead. And he can spell everything right! So smart.
How do you two celebrate Valentine’s Day?
S: We’ve only had one together so far. What’d we do last year for Valentine’s Day, babe?R: We went to that restaurant that Luke worked at.S: Oh yeah, Edulis! Yeah, that was incredible. R: The $220 meal. The most expensive per bite meal I’ve ever eaten.S: Sorry about that. Thank you!
If you could name just one - what would be your favourite part about each other?
S: I’m a huge stress case. He always knows exactly what to say to make me feel better. And I’m not in a relationship where I cry all the time because I’m dating a mean person. He’s so nice. And all my friends love him too, which is huge.R: Tall.
Have any pet peeves about each other?
S: Like, you know when you just want to be mad for a second? And then someone says something that makes almost too much sense, and makes you feel totally ridiculous for being mad because say, you can’t find a parking spot anywhere near your house and you just need to vent about it? He won’t let me vent!R: Road rage.
Do you two have a “song”? If so, what is it + why?
R: Will Hung Sings The Alphabet.S: Is that real? I don’t even know. R: Probably not.S: We always have music on, we’re obsessed with Rdio. And we go to shows all the time. I wouldn’t even know where to start with selecting one song. But I will say that Ryan sings “Hello darkness my old friend” every time something bad happens. Like today we were in a parking lot and he almost dropped a Mentos on the ground but caught it like a magician and said, “Did you see that? It was like, ‘Noooooooo…[sings] hello darkness my old friend.’”R: Okay, our song is “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel. Just one of the best songs ever written.
Most memorable Valentine’s Day?
S: Hopefully this year! Barring any flight delays, we should be in Sydney, Australia to visit one of our close friends who lives in Bondi. We love her. I can’t wait.
Walk us through your perfect date in Toronto.
S: Our first date was pretty perfect. We met outside Playa Cabana and it was the hottest day ever, they don’t have air conditioning I guess? That part wasn’t awesome.R: My tacos were a mix of pulled pork and sweat.S: But then we went outside and kissed and then walked to Varsity to see Moonrise Kingdom. I think any time you can involve Wes Anderson on a first date, it’s a good thing. And then we walked all the way to Ossington, way past his house near Christie Pits, so he could walk me home. That was cute. R: Thank you!S: So we pretty much do that kind of stuff, except on bikes. Walking sucks. Except no it doesn’t, because we always hold hands.R: I would take you out for all you can eat sushi at Sashimi Island and then we’d waddle around the block holding hands and then watch UFC at my house.S: Yeah, or that.

Drake General Store Post-Holidays Staff Party
Although its well past the holidays, this past weekend the Drake General Store team finally had a chance to celebrate our most successful holiday season to date.

Sunday Night we gathered for a post-holiday staff party at one of our favourite Toronto restaurants Roses and Sons’ Big Crow.
We chowed down family-style on a spread that included, homemade pickles with sauerkraut + peppers, ceasar salad loaded with tasty anchovies, charred garlic bread, pork belly, super scrumptious baby back ribs + a ton of sides and accompaniments. Not to mention local beers + top notch red + white wines.
We want to thank Big Crow for the hospitality + grub, and our awesome staff for all their hard work + enthusiasm over the past year.
